Counting words

As I was writing my last post I had to get out Dylan's well-checkup binder to get his stats. While I was in there I ran across some milestone-type information and one of the things I saw was the doc's checklist for a 24 month check-up. It said something about 10 words in addition to mama and daddy.

Ever since then I've been running a mental count of Dylan's words. I'm pretty sure we're upwards of 50 - just the words that he uses spontaneously (meaning not including the hundreds that he'll parrot back). So here's Dylan's word list at 18 months - in no particular order.

Hi, Du.
Ameise. (Ant)
Bagger. (Excavator)
Kran. (Crane)
Hasi. (Rabbit)
Mama.
Papa.
Daddy.
Opa. (Grandpa O)
Oma. (Grandma O)
Gramma.
Goetta. (Godmother)
Nessa.
Rosie.
Hot.
Heiss. (Hot)
Meow.
Bow-wow.
Krah. (Caw)
Goat.
Birdie.
Baum. (Tree)
Home.
Eyes.
Nose.
Hop-hop.
Ice.
Bite.
Eat.
Hung-y.
Down.
Ahi. (Down)
Platsch. (Plop)
Pillow.
Bett. (Bed)
Wrestle. (sounds like ree-sul.)
Toes.
Sock.
Shoes.
Bus.

Steak.
Ada. (Outside)
La-La. (Empty)
Wasser. (Water)
Horsie.
Bottle.
Peas.
Schatzi. (Sweetheart...said while pointing at himself.)
Haie, haie. (Closest translation probably night, night).
Boy.
Baby. (When the pedi showed Dylan a mirror and asked, "who is that?" He said, "baby.")
Nein, nein. (No, no - said with a finger shake.)
Pudding.
Window. (Sounds like wean-doh).
Bade. (Bath)

There are at least 10 more that I'm sure are words I just haven't properly deciphered yet. Not bad for a kid growing up bilingual...Gramma, can you think of any more I've forgotten?

  1. Yup. You'd be Grandpa W. He hasn't picked up grandpa yet though. Although he says Rosie anytime we're on the telephone. Took to that one like a duck to water...

  2. Does he see Vanessa enough to say her name? This list has inspired me to write down Lauren's too. Go Dylan! Such a smartie!

  3. He hasn't seen her in person much, but he sees her picture in the dining room all the time. When we ask him where his sister is, he points at her picture and says, "Nessa." (Or sometimes sissy...)
